the lower bulb painted with a narrative scene with a dignitary, flanked by his attendants, conversing with a lady in a lakeside landscape, the upper section with two reclining scholars in a garden setting, divided by borders of chrysanthemum scroll and floret sprays, all below a all below a wide band of stylized tulip sprays around the waisted neck

Condition

The vase has a small restored chip at the rim with an associated approx. 7.5-cm crack to the neck. Otherwise, there are only minor manufacturing imperfections including scattered burst glaze bubbles, kiln grit to the interior of the footring, and an approx. 1.2-cm firing chip to the interior of the footring (the chipped clay still attached). An old label applied to the base: "Marchant London Transitional 17th Century".
