A LARGE GILT-SPLASHED BRONZE TWO-HANDLED VASE 17TH / 18TH CENTURY

Description

  • Bronze
stoutly cast with the baluster-form body surmounted by a tall trumpet neck, flanked by a pair of dragon-form handles, the shoulder applied with three lion masks alternating with sinuous chilong, the surface of a deep brown color flecked with irregular gold splashes

Roger Keverne, Ltd., London.

Condition

There is an approx.10.5 cm patched section of the the foot with an associated patched repair extending diagonally approx 20 cm to just below one of the the high relief chilong. The base plate has been either consolidated or later replaced. The surface has been applied with a varnish that has darkened over time and and it is possible that the gilding has been refreshed. There are scattered small nicks and wear to the surface overall consistent with age and use.
