Catalogue Note

Mary Ann Steenback Gale (1806-1878) was born in Westchester, New York and married the Reverend Lawson Carter (1793-1868) in New York City in 1823. The couple had two children before moving west, settling in Cleveland where Reverend Carter became the rector at Grace Church, a post he held from 1845 until 1860.

This exceptional portrait is from Phillips’s Border Period, during which time the artist frequently worked along the New York-Massachusetts border.
