  • mounted on stretcher approximately 115 by 73cm., 3ft 9in by 2ft 4in.
together with an Ottoman velvet and metal thread çatma panel, probably Bursa, Turkey, first half 17th century (mounted 125 by 72cm), a flocked canvas palmette pattern wall panel, 18th century (approximately 97 by 56cm); a length of aubergine purple addorsed animal pattern voided velvet, 19th century (approximately 179 by 60cm); a length of loom width light burgundy palmette pattern voided velvet, 19th century (approximately 278 by 60cm); a velvet and applique scrollwork altar panel, 19th century (approximately 132 by 133cm); a cerise silk damask cope with hood and tab clasp, 19th century (approximately 133 by 295cm); and a saffron yellow floral and leaf pattern silk brocade stole (approximately 228 by 26cm); illustrated on-line

 



 

Condition

The brocade fragment, overall measurements; 65cm across the top, 66cm across the top, 109cm the left hand side, 105cm the right hand side. Mounted on stretcher: 115 by 73cm. Loom width panel with original saffron yellow selvedges. Reduced in length and cut top and bottom. The velvet with some wear, sections of very good pile which appear darker in the photograph. With a hole found in the right hand edge approximately 45cm down from the top. Distressed area above the vase, centre of the top section. Oxidisation to the silver thread of brocade, exposing yellow silk threads and where these are lacking the foundation of the velvet is visible. First hand inspection advised, further photographs can be requested from the department. The Catma panel, overall measurements; 65cm across the top, 64cm across the bottom, 119cm the left hand side, 119cm the right hand side. Mounted, 125 by 72cm. Comprised of two pieced sections joined horizontally. The velvet worn in areas, visible from photograph, the lower panel more so than the upper. Most of the metal thread missing and heavily consolidated. First hand inspection is advised, further photographs can be requested from the department. Together with:- A flocked canvas palmette pattern wall panel, 18th century (approximately 97 by 56cm), light terracotta colour – with losses of flocking and glue – revealing support canvas below; A length of aubergine purple adorsed animal pattern voided velvet, 19th century (approximately 179 by 60cm) – with metal braid attached to all sides and lined with complimentary purple striped textile. Good overall condition; A length of loom width light burgundy palmette pattern voided velvet, 19th century (approximately 278 by 60cm) – faded colour, good condition. Red and yellow banded selvedges; A velvet and applique scrollwork altar panel, 19th century (approximately 132 by 133cm); the velvet almost completely worn away, vestiges around edges of motifs present; A cerise silk damask cope with hood and tab clasp, 19th century, (approximately 133 by 295cm), applied with golden ribbon and metal fringing around hood, with canvas lining, 19th century, generally good overall condition, reverse faded colour; A saffron yellow floral and leaf pattern silk brocade stole, (approximately 228 by 26cm), edged with golden braid and metal fringing with coils (the striped cerise silk backing stained).
