Catalogue Note

Léon Indenbaum (1891-1981), a Russian expatriate artist, arrived in France in 1911. He joined the community of Russian artists, together with Chaïm Soutine and Marc Chagall, active in La Ruche, around Montparnasse, where he met Amedeo Modigliani who painted his portrait. In the 1912 Salon des Indépendants exhibition, Jacques Doucet discovers Indenbaum to whom he commissions various works for the avant-gardist decoration of his avenue du Bois de Boulogne apartments. From 1916 until 1919, Indenbaum joins Antoine Bourdelle's workshop. In 1968, he woud be awarded the Institut de France Georges Wildenstein prize.
