Condition
Overall the bronze is in good condition with minor surface dirt, particularly in the crevices, and wear to the patina at the high points consistent with age and handling. Catalogue Note
Starting in 1877, Gustave Doré created thirty eight sculptures including L'Effroi or L'Amour Maternel of which a lager plaster is in the Musée d'art moderne et contemporain, Strasbourg. This model is strongly influenced by the marble titled Le Messie completed by Albert-Ernest Carrier Belleuse in 1867 (Saint-Vincent-de-Paul Church).
