Rock crystal, onyx, cultured pearl and diamond necklace, 1920s and later

The clasp designed as a carved fluted rock crystal within a surround of rose diamonds and calibré-cut onyx, to a necklace composed of four strands of cultured pearls, length approximately 350mm, French assay, import assay and partial maker's marks.

Formerly in the collection of Hélène Rochas.

The necklace offered here were part of the collection of Madame Hélène Rochas who married the French perfumer and fashion designer Marcel Rochas. In 1955, after her husband's death, she took over the company and the House created mythic fragrances like 'Madame Rochas', 'Femme' and 'Eau de Rochas. Hélène Rochas, known for her remarkable beauty, was one of the most elegant women of her generation and recognised for her refined taste.

Hélène Rochas: "During the daytime I wear very little jewelry, sometimes nothing at all. For the evening, I prefer classic pearls. My favourite is a gold collar of pearls, rock crystals and diamonds. It's old, from 1925, and nobody knows where it comes from or who made it."

Stamped with French assay mark for 18 carat gold to the tongue. Partial maker's mark on the tongue (D within a lozenge). Diamonds bright and lively, estimated clarity I (included) on average. Two onyx and one diamond deficient. Remaining onyx with small chips.Centre later converted to a necklace clasp, possibly originally a brooch, with later frame soldered to reverse with evidence of lead solder remaining. Rock crystal centre possibly not original. Pearls with slight cream body colour and pinkish overtones, good lustre and well matched. Overall good condition and secure clasp.
