Description

The bezel set with an oval crystal-intaglio depicting the monogram of Prince Arthur, within a surround of mixed-cut sapphires and diamonds, to a crown surmount set with emeralds, rubies and diamonds, the reverse inscribed "From Prince Arthur 1868", size N1/2, later ring mount with British hallmarks for 1982 and maker's marks for Garrards & Co.

Condition

Later ring fitting, shank with British hallmark for London, 18 carat gold, date letter H for 1982, maker's mark G & Co Ltd for Garrard & Co. The reverse of the ring inscribed 'From Prince Arthur, 1868'. Rock crystal cabochon colourless, transparent. Some fading and running to areas of pigment in painted intaglio, possibly due to moisture damage. Diamonds bright and lively, estimated total diamond weight approximately 0.40 - 0.60 carats. Sapphires mid blue, emeralds mid green, rubies purplish red, all transparent, with typical inclusions visible under magnification. Front of ring measuring approximately 17 x 25mm. Light scratches to metal and stone surfaces consistent with age and wear. In good condition.

Catalogue Note

Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, 1st May 1850 – 16th January 1942, was the seventh child and third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

It was at an early age that Arthur developed an interest in the army and in 1866 he enrolled at the Royal Military College at Woolwich, from where he graduated two years later and was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Corps of Royal Engineers on 18th June 1868. The Prince transferred to the Royal Regiment of Artillery on 2nd November 1868.

He served for some 40 years in the army seeing service in various parts of the British Empire. During which he became the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, as well as the Earl of Sussex. In 1911, he was appointed as Governor General of Canada.
