上款：「薇閣」即卞綍昌（1873-1946），江蘇儀徵人，出身世家。捐納同知，曾出使日本，任駐橫濱領事、長崎正領事官，返國後轉職農工商部，辛亥革命後歸隱不出。

註：儀徵卞氏、義寧陳氏同出官宦世家，如卞士雲、陳寶箴皆掌一省之政，兩家具世誼，互有過從。卞綍昌擅書，好收藏，集明清書法大家作品極豐。陳師曾金石書畫俱精，亦以藝事相往來。

卞綍昌耿介清廉，故本幅寫白菜兩株，肥厚結實，自然生動，兼題「須知清白久傳名」，實畫家以清白家風喻卞氏持家處世之道。
