註:言子,即言偃,孔門弟子也。其墓葬虞山,始建於西漢,經歷代修繕,乃當地歷史名迹,慕名而遊者眾。畫中所記乃鄭午昌經友招邀往遊,同謁言子墓。畫家以構圖奇絶稱勝,惟既出諸紀遊,圖中一景一物,大抵依循親歷所見,若對照他小字親書自撰之謁言墓記,如過橋、登石磴、越牌坊、謁墓、以至沿山上攀,臨最高處「辛峰亭」,俯瞰城景,所述之景貌細節,堪與筆下所狀相對照,此亦其紀遊之作的特點,雖非常現筆下,若考他翌年遊姑蘇靈岩,另有畫作紀之,無論構圖取法、筆墨、以至畫幅尺寸,與本幅足堪相埒。
畫上自題「略師大痴法」,寫山體輪廓略見子久大概外,餘者如點景、設色、以至用筆精細處,皆畫家自我風格流露,無依傍前人門徑。畫中起首處,房舍相連,牆瓦交接,正是城中景貌,其偏據畫面下方一角,益顯虞山之高崇,頗見宋畫構圖之取勢。整幅佈局,虛實呼應,主次分明, 極見經營用心。
