Condition

Paper is hinged to mat at the upper edge with archival tape. There are a few faint creases to the sheet. One small, faint spot of discoloration at upper right, and another in the upper left, just to the left of the figure's shoulder.

Catalogue Note

This work is a preparatory study for the male figure at the far right of William Bouguereau's L'adoration des Mages (fig. 1), exhibited at the Salon of 1885 along with its pendant, L'adoration des bergers.  Both paintings are in Église Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, Paris.
