Catalogue Note

Zhu Gang hails from an artistic family of calligraphers, including his father, a noted student of the  important experts of Chinese art in the 20th century Wu Hufan. Deeply influenced by the lyrical compositions of the Southern Song dynasty, Zhu seeks to liberate tradition towards an abstract form of expression. Using minimal brushstrokes and demonstrating a mastery of calligraphy, he fuses the zhangmo and feibai techniques to achieve a hybrid character meaning ‘image’ that both holds its structure and moves across the surface. “If my works can produce resonance, I call this form of communication yixiang [imagery].” – Zhu Gang, interview 2016
