Zhu Gang hails from an artistic family of calligraphers, including his father, a noted student of the  important experts of Chinese art in the 20^th century Wu Hufan. Deeply influenced by the lyrical compositions of the Southern Song dynasty, Zhu seeks to liberate tradition towards an abstract form of expression. Using minimal brushstrokes and demonstrating a mastery of calligraphy, he fuses the zhangmo and feibai techniques to achieve a hybrid character meaning ‘image’ that both holds its structure and moves across the surface. “If my works can produce resonance, I call this form of communication yixiang [imagery].” – Zhu Gang, interview 2016
