Literature
“If the rays accentuating the main figure’s nimbus are indeed meant to evoke the crown of thorns, then this same enraged hero is a martyr, a sacrifice like the Christ. In Basquiat’s situation, it is eminently plausible that this is meant as a reading of his role as an artist, all the more so when we consider the various Afro-American heroes he honors: athletes and musicians whose lives tended to end as passions suffered beneath the yoke of white oppression.”
Leonhard Emmerling, Basquiat, Cologne 2003, p. 32
Condition
This work is in good condition overall. The top edge of the sheet has been torn irregularly, likely at the time of execution and there is tape residue visible at the upper corners, also likely from the time of execution. There is evidence of light wear and handling along the edges and all accretions, creases and smudges, particularly in the lower right quadrant, appear to be from the time of execution and inherent to the artist’s working method. Under very close inspection, an L-shaped repaired tear is visible in the upper right quadrant, approximately 7-inches from the top and 2-inches from the right edge, that extends 4-inches vertically and 2-inches horizontally. The sheet is hinged verso to the mat intermittently along the edges. Framed under Plexiglas.
