Condition

This work is in good condition overall. There is evidence of wear and handling along the edges including minor hairline craquelure at the pull margins with some small areas of loss along the edges. There is a ½- inch small indentation to the edge of the canvas just above center on the left edge. The canvas is lightly soiled. There are several black media accretions in the lower left quadrant, a few pinpoint brown media accretions in the lower left quadrant and also along the upper right corner edge and a minor circular brown accretion in the lower center. Under close inspection, scattered vertical hairline craquelure in the thicker, white-impastoed areas and several areas of circular cracks, most notably in the lower left quadrant, in the green form and in the white impastoed area below the red form are visible. Under Ultraviolet light inspection, several scattered drip accretions and the aforementioned brown accretion fluoresce lightly but do not appear to be the result of restoration. Framed.

Catalogue Note

"Very early on, Stamos found particular incentive in how to paint from Milton Avery and in what to paint from Arthur Dove. During the mid-forties, he located reaffirmation for his developing ideas and practice in the paintings and transcendental ideal of the 19th Century American landscape painters of the Hudson River School, as well as in the nocturnes of Whistler, Chinese and Japanese calligraphy and painting."
