Description

  • mahogany
with a turned rope-twist top rail, the back splat carved with stylised anchors, with later dropin seats on sabre legs ending in paw feet (20)

Provenance

Reputedly made for one of Lord Horatio Nelson’s admirals after the battle of Trafalgar;
The late T.C. Litler-Jones Esq., sold by direction of the Beneficiaries, Christie’s, London, 14 December 1967;
Anonymous sale, Christie’s, London, 4 July 1996, lot 289, where purchased by the family of the current owner.

Condition

Overall in reasonable restored condition with typically old marks and scratches and losses to carved detail including the paw feet. Armchairs: Good condition. Both later. Side chairs: Twelve with restoration to the top rail. Loses to carved detail and mouldings. Signs of former ebonised surface. Feet scuffed. Two later replacements.
