Condition

Executed on cream wove paper, laid down on cardboard. There are some pinholes to all four corners and towards the edges; most of them are not visible when framed. There is a spot of retouching (approx. 2 cm long) in the white pigment visible under UV light, in the lower left quadrant to the left of the bottom left sitter’s left hand arm. There is a nick and an associated small repaired tear (approx. 1 cm long) to the right part of the lower edge (not visible when framed). There are some slight fox marks in places and the sheet is mount stained. There are some scattered handling marks and studio stains, predominately away from the centre of the composition. There are some fine lines of paint shrinkage with associated flecks of pigment loss to the most thickly applied paint, notably above the head of the bottom left sitter and above his hand left hand. This work is in fairly good condition.
