Catalogue Note

Made from lustrous green jadeite with patches of yellowish-brown colouring and marked in part by chicken-bone white calcification, the outer surface of this sword slide is engraved with a fine linear exquisitely interlocking animal mask design.  According to how the archaeologist Sun Ji categorizes  types and styles of scabbard slides, this type belongs to the double edge-curling type, for its flat tube is hollow inside to let the scabbard band run through; see Sun Ji, “Yuju jian yu zhishi peijian fa [Jade Decorated Swords and the Way Swords were Suspended with Jade Slides]”, Kaogu [Archaeology] 1, 1985, p. 54, fig. 7:8.
