Catalogue Note
Presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper "To Juliette and John Spalding with all best wishes always Ernest Hemingway Rochester 1961."
Hemingway had been receiving treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, from the very end of November 1960 through late January 1961, and again for most of May and June 1961. This volume must, therefore, be among the very last that he inscribed prior to his death in Ketchum, Idaho, 2 July 1961, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
