Marks, spine elaborately gilt in six compartments, covers with gilt borders, front cover with circular red morocco onlay with Dickens's monogram in gilt, edges gilt and modestly gauffered, red morocco doublures with elaborate gilt dentelles, front doublure with central oval miniature portrait of Dickens after Maclise, under glass and framed in brass, rear doublure with lengthy gilt-lettered presentation to First Lady Grace Coolidge (see below). Red silk linings, gilt-stamped facsimile of Dickens's signature on front lining; very minor wear at head of spine. Half brown morocco slipcase, chemise.

Catalogue Note

First edition in book form in a handsome Cosway binding, presented to First Lady Grace Coolidge by the authors of "Pickwick": A Play in Three Acts, which had its premiere at the Belasco Theatre in Washington, D.C. The lettering on the rear doublure reads, "Souvenir of the First Performance of 'Pickwick' The Belasco Theatre Washington, D.C. Beginning Monday Evening February 14, 1927. Presented to Mrs. Calvin Coolidge by Cosmo Hamilton and Frank C. Reilly."
