Description

  • 36.2cm., 14 1/4 in. high
urn form with raised cast husk capped handles, the body demi-fluted below a band of vitruvian scrolls and twin draped pendant husked cartouches, engraved with arms of George III and another, the waisted cover with husked rim and chased with acanthus leaves, below a finial cast as the royal crown, interior rim of the cover engraved with an inscription

Condition

Fully and clearly marked to the cover rim, the rim of the base fully hallmarked but with no maker's mark. Some light wear to gilding, especially to the crown, but generally good.

Catalogue Note

The inscription reads: 'This cup was given by his majesty King George the 3rd [sic] to his godson The Hon. George Montagu Born y 4th of feb, Baptized y 5th of March 1773'

The second coat-of-arms are those of Montague, for George John Montague, the self styled Viscount Hinchingbrooke and later 6th Earl of Sandwich. He married Lady Louisa Mary Ann Julia Harriet Lowry-Corry, daughter of Armar Lowry-Corry, 1st Earl Belmore and Lady Harriet Hobart. They had two daughters and one son, before his death from Consumption at the Villa of Cardinal Consalvi, Albano, in 1818.
