Catalogue Note
The crest is that of Grosvenor below an earl's coronet for Robert, 2nd Earl and later 1st Marquess of Westminster (1767-1845). As Viscount Belgrave he served as M.P. for East Looe 1789-91, Chester 1790-1802, and Lord of the Admiralty 1789-91 before succeeding his father in 1802. A keen patron of the arts, he added to the Grosvenor collection of paintings and began the rebuliding of Eaton Hall. In 1805 he purchased Grosvenor House, then spent £17,000 redecorating the residence. In 1826 he began laying out Belgravia, and in 1831 he was created Marquess of Westminster as one of the Coronation peerages of William IV. In March 1841 he was received as a Knight of the Garter.
