Condition

There is weathering to the surface throughout, consistent with placement outdoors. There are several re-attachments and restorations, including to Psyche's arms. Cupid's wings are lost and the resulting holes on his back have been filled professionally. There is dirt and staining to the marble throughout. The column is composed of sections. There are several losses and chips, as well as restored breaks. Otherwise the condition is stable.

Catalogue Note

Perhaps Canova's most famous model, the group of Cupid and Psyche was an immediate success, and the subject of many copies and reworkings. The monumental size group in the Louvre continues to draw visitors from across the globe (museum no. MR 1777).
