Condition
Good condition for an object of this type and age. Chips to the back of both ears. Minor marks, nicks, scratches, rubbing, abrasions, and wear consistent with age and handling. Chipping to toes. Underside between legs is hollowed out. Underside of each foot embedded with a threaded pin for attachment to base. Exceptionally fine medium brown glossy patina with remains of dark stain in the coiffure, ears, breasts, and navel.

Catalogue Note
Chez les Makonde, « la femme a un statut important aussi bien dans la mythologie, la religion que dans l'art. Selon la légende, peu après sa création, le premier homme rampa hors de la brousse, sculpta une figure féminine en bois et s'endormit. A son réveil, la statue était devenue une vraie femme qui lui donna beaucoup d'enfants et devint, après sa mort, l'ancêtre vénérée des Makonde : ainsi s'expliquerait le culte d'une ancêtre et la profusion des figures féminines sculptées, gardées dans des huttes ou accompagnant les voyageurs » (Kerchache, Paudrat et Stephan, L'art Africain, 1988, p. 572).
Puissante interprétation de cette ancêtre féminine, cette sculpture acquise in situ à l'orée du XXe siècle illustre au plus haut degré les canons de beauté exaltés dans la statuaire Makonde. La tête, proportionnellement démesurée, concentre l'attention. Elle s'anime dans la force des traits et de l'expression, et dans la délicatesse des scarifications. A l'arrière, une cavité atteste son usage rituel, tandis que son usure et les nuances de la profonde patine miel témoignent de sa grande ancienneté.
