Catalogue Note

Leone Piccioni in Burri e altri amici, 2015

When seeking a literary equivalent to Burri's work (some invoke Sartre, a European vein, and reject the possibility of an American vein, as referenced by others), without even attempting contemporary or sociological parallels, I think of La Ginestra, and how- from that poetic monument- dedicated to the desolation of the Earth's crust, and man's fate- deemed to misery, Leopardi is nevertheless able to raise a cry for solidarity- a message of fraternity among men, that they may react by helping one another, thus lightening the burden of the fate dealt to them by the present. The same, I feel, emerges from Burri's work, from the vision of wounded flesh and the Earth's crust (some of its depressions- it has been said- resemble aerial views from a height), from burns and wounds, and base material there emerges, similarly, a gesture of solidarity and love.
