Condition

Both jar and head were broken in several pieces in ancient or modern times. Resultant cracks and repairs were filled. There are restorations along some of these breaks and cracks, especially on proper left side of baboon head as well as on right side of face and on eyebrows. There is some black pigment on eyes and red on mouth which could be ancient. Lid fits jar very well but, as is often the case with canopic jars, one cannot be certain that both elements belonged together in antiquity. For a photo of jar and lid prior to most recent restoration campaign see Sotheby's NY 2011 catalogue illustration.
