Condition
The following condition report has been provided by Antonio Alvarez, Antonio Alvarez Fine Art Services, Inc., 29 West 36th Street, New York, NY, 212-254-2255. Mr. Alvarez is an independent conservator and not an employee of Sotheby's.
Overall Condition:
This pastel painting on paper mounted to paperboard is in good condition overall.
Structural Condition:
The support is composed of a smooth paper mounted to a 1/4" thick acidic paperboard. The paperboard does not present planar distortions. Handling over time and contact with framing materials have contributed to a soft 2" crease at the top-left corner. There are two mended tears: a 2" wide and shallow tear at the top-right edge at the corner and 3/8" tall and shallow tear at the lower-left edge. There are several surface abrasions scattered at the edges from repeated handling and framing. These include abrasions at the outer edges, a 1/2" dent at the centerright edge, fingerprints at the outer edges, and a thin 5/8" line of lost pastel and adhesive accretion at the upperleft edge. Two minute paper losses to the paperboard support are found at the bottom-right edge.
Visual Condition:
The paper is mildly oxidized throughout and embrittled at all outer edges from contact with acidic material and a natural process of aging. The verso exhibits more extensive staining and patterning from a former acidic panel backing board. There is a mild, 1/4" wide mat burn at the four edges from contact with former framing materials. Contact with water has contributed to a shallow 4 1/4" wide water stains at the bottom-right edge near the corner.
