Catalogue Note

Like his contemporaries Childe Hassam and Robert Henri, Lawson was influenced by the nocturnes of James Abbott McNeil Whistler. The present work reflects the tonal harmonies espoused by Whistler. It has been suggested that the building in the upper center is the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower.
