Catalogue Note

Scenes of combat and hunting held enduring fascination amongst the orientalist painters and Schreyer was certainly not immune to them. Born in 1828 in Frankfurt-am-Main, he trained in Germany and travelled numerous times to the Orient, first to Turkey and then to Egypt, Syria and Algeria. Like Fromentin and Delacroix before him, Schreyer excelled in depicting horses and in capturing their anatomy and strength with great skill, as visible in the present work.
