Condition
The canvas has not been lined. There are two faint stretcher marks visible, corresponding to the upper and right members of the stretcher. There are some scattered lines of fine craquelure, notably in the background in the upper half of the composition, also visible in the catalogue illustration. There are two minor spots of paint loss in the extreme upper left corner and in the extreme lower left corner respectively.
Ultra-violet light reveals an uneven layer of residual varnish and some minor isolated spots of retouching addressing old paint flaking, including some spots in the background in the upper right corner, one spot in the extreme lower right corner and two spots in the lower left quadrant. Otherwise, this work is in good overall condition and ready to hang.

Catalogue Note
After studying at the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen (1882-1884), Carl Holsøe enrolled in Peder Severin Krøyer's school, where he met Vilhelm Hammershøi whose work had a formative influence on him. In 1886 Holsøe exhibited for the first time at Charlottenborg's December exhibition. In the present painting, Holsøe uses his recurrent motif of interiors in which his treatment of light and colours plays in harmony over the walls and the furniture.
