Description
- Félix Ziem
- Coucher de soleil à Venise
- signed Ziem lower right
- oil on panel
- 54 by 85cm., 21 by 33½in.
Provenance
Sir Arthur Du Cros (probably acquired circa the 1930s. Du Cros, 1871-1955, was an industrialist and MP for Hastings and later Clapham); thence by descent to the present owner
Condition
The panel is flat, even, and ensuring a stable support. There is a circa 3cm horizontal split visible on the front of the painting, closer to the centre of the right framing edge. A couple of very small spots of paint flaking are also visible upon close inspection in the lower right corner. Ultra-violet light reveals some scattered strokes of strengthening in the water just below the front of the gondola, in the clouds and around the setting sun. Otherwise, this work presents very well and is overall in good condition.
Presented in a simple gilt frame.
