Condition

The original canvas has not been lined. A stretcher bar line corresponding to the horizontal stretcher member is visible. Ultra-violet light reveals one minor spot of cosmetic retouching in the lower right corner and some intermittent strokes in the extreme lower framing edge. This work is otherwise in very good condition and ready to hang. Presented in a floating gilt frame. Colours are somewhat lighter than in the catalogue illustration.

Catalogue Note

Painted circa 1900, the present work is the culmination in a series of allegorical figures and muses that Martin produced in the 1890s. Henri Martin was particularly fond of the theme of the muse in the form of a beautiful young woman 'visiting' the artist. He first explored the subject in 1885 in the painting Le Philosophe ou L'Inspiration du poète
