Catalogue Note
Steger's style is primarily indebted to Georg Kolbe, who enabled the sculptor's interest in the female form whilst she was his pupil, and helped to establish her in the art world of Berlin, Germany’s pre-eminent cultural city at the turn of the century. Her work centres strongly on the female nude, and emphasises her particular fascination with the rhythm and expression of the 'New German Dance', resulting in her sculpting of its primary performers in Mary Wigman and Josephine Baker. The suppression of detail and simplification of form in Steger’s female figures, who always refrain from eye contact, helps to portray them as fiercely independent and self-assured.
A very similar cast to the present model was sold in these rooms on 14 December 2016, lot 113, for £30,000.
