Description

finely carved with straight sides divided into four bracket foliations, the top of the cover carved in low relief with two flowering orchid blossoms and long elegantly curved leaves, all against a 'basket-weave' diaper ground, the exterior and base of the box similarly carved with a woven design, the edges of the box and cover framed with raised borders, the flat top and base with a slightly broader frame, the stone of a dark cinnabar-red colour

Condition

The box and cover are in overall good condition. There are small bruises shallow nicks to the edges, including the rims of both and the flanges and base of the box, the largest measuring 0.5 to the rim of the cover. There are also scratches.

Catalogue Note

This charming box is carved with a flowering orchid over a finely carved diaper ground reminiscent of woven baskets. A soapstone box and cover of this form and similarly carved with a floral motif over a diaper ground, but inscribed with the seal of Zhou Bin, was sold at Christie’s New York, 19th September 2006, lot 10.
