the convex side carved with a rock formation of irregular form and rendered with a jagged surface, the upper left corner with a four-character lishu inscription reading Dongtian yipin ('Highest Rank in the Grotto Heaven') and dated in xingshu to the beginning of summer of the jiyou year and signed Zixiang, the lower right corner with a seal mark reading Wenyu qingwan ('For the pure enjoyment of Wenwu'), the patina of a warm reddish-brown colour
Condition
The wristrest is in overall good condition with typical surface wear and minute bruises and nicks to the edges and corner. There is an approx. 0.7 cm stabilised flake to the upper right corner. There are losses to the gilding. The catalogue illustration is slightly redder than the actual colour of the wood.

Catalogue Note
Zhang Xiong (1803-86) was a collector of metal and stone inscriptions, paintings as well as calligraphy. He also excelled in seal carving, calligraphy and painting in many genres. A zitan brushpot signed Zhang Xiong is offered in this sale, lot 28.
Wenyu is the sobriquet of Jin Yuan, a contemporary of Zhang Xiong, who was a native of Renhe (present day Hanghou) and is known to have served as the dianshi (district policeman and jail warden) of Haiyang in Guangdong. Jin was an accomplished poet, whose works were printed in the Yunhua guan shichao [Draft Poetry from the Weeding Flowers Hall].
