the convex side lacquered black and delicately gilt-engraved with a scene of two magpies perched on thin branches bearing clusters of blooms, the left side with a three-character inscription reading Zizhuang ke ('Carved by Zizhuang')
Catalogue Note
Zizhuang was the zi of Bao Huchen, who attained the zhusheng degree in Kuian (modern day Huzhou, Zhejiang province). He is noted for his seal script (zhuan) calligraphy in the style of Deng Shiru, and was also proficient at seal carving and landscape paintings.
