Mary Katherine Goddard (1738–1816) took over the Providence Gazette from her brother William in 1765. She moved on to Philadelphia to publish the Pennsylvania Chronicle. In Baltimore, she published the Maryland Journal from 1774 to 1784 when William returned and forced her to give up control. She also served as the postmaster of the Baltimore Post Office from 1775 to 1789. In 1777, she was chosen by Congress as the first to print the Declaration of Independence with the names of the signers.
