Catalogue Note

Street artist David Choe’s fiercely imaginative paintings are complex, seductive, ambitious and equally brutal and mischievous. They invoke comics, gothic art, Surrealism, pornography, and fashion illustration.
Choe’s thirst for life is never satisfied and his artworks – made with oils, acrylics, and collage – are inspired by his tremendous experiences, from incarceration in a Tokyo jail to a trip down the Mississippi River on a paddleboat. David’s works project a dramatic, fantastical, often sexually explicit, vision of the world.
David Choe was commissioned a mural at the Facebook headquarters and a work for the infamous Hollywood procuress Heidi Fleiss. His exhibitions culminated in a solo show at the Santa Rosa Museum of Contemporary Art in 2005. For the US Presidential election campaign of 2008 David produced Hussein, a portrait of Barack Obama that was hung in the White House upon Obama’s victory.
In 2012, Choe was dubbed “the prince of all media” by Howard Stern after appearing on his show, where he went on to become one of the year’s most popular new guests; while a documentary about his life (Dirty Hands) became the most popular film at the Los Angeles Film Festival the year it premiered and further garnered multiple sold-out showings at the MoMA in New York.
