Catalogue Note
Shepard Fairey, born in 1970, is an American contemporary street artist, graphic designer, activist, illustrator and founder of a popular streetwear brand OBEY.
Fairey first became known thanks to his sticker campaign Andre the Giant Has a Posse when he was still studying at the Rhode Island School of Design. His much later Hope poster of Barack Obama produced for the 2008 U.S. presidential election became widely distributed around the globe, bringing Fairey international fame. Fairey’s works are distinctly political, and often support social causes or oppose corporate influence. His art combines elements of graffiti, pop art, business art, and Marxist theory. Street art portraits that Fairey creates are easily recongnisable for their graphic, bold style, geometric patterns, and use of red, black, and white colours.
The artist had his works exhibited worldwide, including Denmark, France, Germany, Spain, the UK, the USA, and Australia. His artworks are housed in some of the most important collections worldwide, including the MoMA in New York, National Portrait Gallery in Washington, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
