Description

  • Jade
skilfully rendered in the form of a dancer in a dramatic posture, the figure rendered clad in an elaborate costume finely detailed with ruyi motifs and surmounted by a tall headdress, the pale grey stone highlighted with russet streaks

Condition

minor bruises and chips to fragile edges, including the ribbon, left hand and underside of the robe

Catalogue Note

Compare a celadon jade figure of a lady standing in similar dramatic pose, and wearing garments with long sleeves, sold at Christie’s New York, 4th June 1987, lot 100. Small portable figures of dancers and actors were carved in jade from as early as the Tang dynasty; see for example two jade figures of foreign dancers, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum.
