The canvas is unlined with a number of restorations visible on the reverse. There is a light stretcher mark corresponding to the central horizontal stretcher bar Ultra-violet light reveals signs of retouching which are relatively minor given the overall size of the painting, notably: along the left and right framing edges, areas around the head of the standing man facing the viewer which have discoloured slightly, an area to the right of the man seated on the camel, and some other scattered restorations, including to the lower right of the man second from the left, and in the sand. The work presents well when viewed under normal light, and is ready to hang. Presented in a narrow wooden frame.

Adolf Meckel von Hemsbach fut un élève du peintre professeur des écoles des Beaux-Arts de Düsseldorf et de Carlsruhe, Hans Gude (1825-1903). Il resta marqué d’ailleurs par l’école de Düsseldorf dont les caractéristiques : compositions très classiques et coloris particulièrement éclatants, se retrouvent dans ses toiles. En 1880, il se rendit en Orient en compagnie des peintres Bracht et Schirm avec lesquels il traversa l’Egypte, la Palestine et l’actuelle Jordanie. Ce premier voyage assit certainement la réputation du peintre qui remporta en 1886 la petite médaille d’or de l’exposition des Beaux-Arts de Berlin. Il diversifia ensuite ses destinations comme en témoignent les motifs algériens et tunisiens apparaissant dans ses peintures après 1890. Notre peinture, datée de 1891 pourrait être une illustration de ses séjours dans le Maghreb. Elle dévoile surtout son talent à peindre des scènes prises sur le vif, tranchant avec les scènes de la vie quotidienne parfois un peu plates d’autres peintres orientalistes.
Meckel rentra définitivement d’Orient en 1892 et envoya cinq toiles à l’exposition d’art de Berlin l’année suivante, quatre furent retenues. Après sa mort prématurée en 1893, plusieurs expositions lui rendirent hommage, l’une à Berlin en 1893, d’autres à Dresde et Munich en 1894. D'envergure, elles rassemblèrent de nombreuses toiles dont peut-être la nôtre.
