Condition

Oil on paper laid on canvas. There are some small spots of paint flaking, notably to the right of the centre of the upper edge. The signature to the lower left is rubbed, and as per Lee Johnson, may have been added (see cataloguing). There are some very fine lines of craquelures in the shirt of the rider. Ultra violet light shows an even and quite opaquely fluorescing varnish and no notable visible signs of retouching.
