Condition

The sheet has been attached to the mount along the lower quarter on the reverse. There is an inscription on the upper part of the reverse, apparently by Villot as mentioned in the cataloguing. The sheet is a little sunned, however the work is otherwise in good overall condition, and the colours quite fresh. Presented in a coved and fluted gilt frame, under glass. The mount appears to be old and for conservation reasons it may be advisable to replace it. The colours overall are less orange/warm in reality than in the catalogue illustration.

Catalogue Note

Cette aquarelle représentant un seigneur richement vêtu de satin a été gravée par la suite à l'eau-forte par Delacroix en 1833. Il y aurait trois épreuves représentant ce seigneur, conformes au dessin d'origine. Une quatrième épreuve, toujours réalisée par Delacroix existe mais l'artiste l'a modifiée en y ajoutant à la pointe sèche un bras qui tient la bride d'un cheval ainsi que des cavaliers en arrière-plan.
Cette aquarelle gouachée figure dans la vente de Frédéric Villot, ami et collectionneur d'Eugène Delacroix en 1865. Des annotations de la main de Villot se trouvent au dos de la feuille.
