Condition
To the naked eye:
The painting appears in good condition. It has been correctly re-lined during the 20th century so the painting has not been compressed. It has also been correctly cleaned (also during the 20th century) preserving the glazes. We notice some very minor losses in the lower border due to the frame friction.
Inspection under UV light reveals some green varnish marks. There are no restorations.

Catalogue Note
La carrière de Pietro Antonio Rotari est assez atypique. Il pratiqua d'abord la peinture comme un simple passe-temps ; mais faisant preuve d'une habilité remarquable, il entra dans l'atelier du peintre vénitien de sujets d'histoire Antonio Balestra. Rapidement, il fit preuve d'un grand talent de coloriste et il s'éloigna de la peinture d'histoire pour se spécialiser dans les représentations de personnages en buste, créant un réel sentiment de tranquilité pour son spectateur, parfois même de mélancolie.
Son art fut très apprécié lors de ses voyages en Europe de l'Est, notamment à Vienne et à Dresde. Il est appelé en Russie par la Grande Catherine qui lui donne le titre de Premier peintre de l'Empire. Le Palais de Peterhof en Russie conserve le plus spectaculaire ensemble de l'artiste. A la mort du peintre en 1764, l'impératrice Catherine II achète à la veuve du peintre l'intégralité du fond d'atelier. Un salon entier du palais est ainsi recouvert de 368 oeuvres du maître.
