Condition
The artist's canvas has been secured with a strip-lining along the four tacking edges There is a faint pattern of hairline craquelure.
There is a tiny hole in the upper left quadrant, visible in the catalogue illustration.
Ultra violet light reveals quite extensive spots and strokes of retouching in the left half of the sky, a thin vertical restoration above the rightmost mast of the central ship, and more minor scattered spots elsewhere.
Under normal light the painting presents well overall.
