Catalogue Note

First edition. Although part of a military expedition sent to Dutch Guiana to subdue a slave rebellion, Stedman was horrified by the brutalities suffered by the slaves and the ferocity with which they were punished for their insurrection. His text and its sometimes shocking illustrations were embraced by the abolitionist movement.
