Catalogue Note

The third or fourth edition in English Boccaccio's De casibus virorum illustrium and the first edition of Lydgate's Daunce Machabree, which is lacking in many copies. The  first English edition of De casibus virorum was produced by Richard Pynson in 1494 (Goff B-710; STC 3175) with blocks adapted from Jean du Pré's 1483/84 Paris edition. Lydgate based his translation in rhyme royal on Laurent de Premierfait's French prose translation in the Du Pré edition. Pynson's second edition (1527) employed copies of the 1494 blocks. Eight of these blocks were subsequently used in Tottel's edition. An undated edition by Richard Wayland is presumed to have been printed in 1554, but priority between this edition and Tottel's has not been established. A very good copy of a rare book.
