Condition

Good condition overall all with superficial surface dirt, especially to the crevices, and minor chips visible at several places, consistent with age and handling. Some worming visible all over the surface, especially to the lower part of the piece. A few splits to the wood visible at several places. The front lower right corner has been replaced, including the tips of the two feet of the Christ. The rope has been reattached at several places. His back shows the original traces of the saw and a remnant of an old metallic peg where the piece was probably attached. A dent to the left is probably a trace of an old fixation as well.

Catalogue Note

Ce sujet, caractéristique de la sculpture du Brabant, notamment du Hainaut, à la fin du XVe et au début du XVIe siècle, s'inspire de gravures largement diffusées au nord de l'Europe. Notre composition peut ainsi être rapprochée de la planche n° 5 de la Passion du Christ par Martin Schongauer (1450-1491), gravée vers 1480-83. On remarque notamment le soin apporté au traitement de la chevelure en fines boucles, du manteau en plis profonds, ainsi que de la corde enlaçant ses mains et ses pieds.
