Condition

Overall in good condition. Inpaint under right jaw-line and right of nose. Heavy varnish obscuring background. Relined and restretched.

Catalogue Note

Theus was born in Chur, Switzerland in 1716. He emigrated with his parents to Orangeburg Township, South Carolina around 1735. He became the leading painter in South Carolina, providing portraits, "landskips, coach, and sign painting" for his affluent clients within 100-mile radius of Charleston.1
