Catalogue Note

Valued for their subtlety and restraint rather than their expense, wood objects mounted in Fabergé's workshops were often presented as gifts which would not compromise or embarrass the recipients.  A similar wood bread and salt plate from the Moscow branch, with more lavish Slavic silver mounts and embellished with carnelians, was presented to Emperor Nicholas II and the Empress Alexandra in 1903 from the city of Libava and is now in the Hermitage (ERO-5424).  For more information on Fabergé's use of wood in its production, please see K. McCarthy, "Forgotten Fabergé," The Antique Dealers and Collectors Guide, May-June 2004, pp. 40-42.
