Description

  • approximately 181 by 136cm; 5ft. 11in., 4ft. 6in.

Condition

136cm across the top, 136cm across the bottom, 181cm the left hand side, 178cm the right hand side. Soft lustrous wool with flexible handle. Pile at highest 3-4mm down to 2mm. Some minor oxidisation to the dark brown, as to be expected with dye. Losses at both ends. Warp fringing overlocked. Asymmetrically knotted. Sidecords re-overcast. This is an unusual design and a striking and decorative rug.

For an interesting comparable example of an Ushak rug, West Anatolia, 16th century, (233 by 143cm), with similar hooked medallion against a plain cerise field, and spandrels with overall repeat small motif, of similar design to that used across the field of the present example, see Herrmann, Eberhart, Seltene Orientteppiche, Munich, 1986, Vol. VIII, Cat. No. 1., pp.18-19.
